Frequently Asked Questions:

What Sorts of Issues Does Chiropractic Care Address?
Chiropractors treat a person's overall health using the body's natural protection for the central nervous system in a structure called the spinal cord. The spinal cord is comprised of a series of 24 vertebrae separated by 23 discs. These vertebrae and discs are surrounded by a number of very pain sensitive muscles, joints and ligaments. Throughout a person's daily life, their spinal vertebrae can become misaligned or "stuck" either by something as simple as sleeping in an odd position or by something much more complicated such as a car accident. When something happens to the spinal cord that causes it to become irritated, also known as subluxation, this can cause pain, tingling, burning, numbness, loss of movement, muscle tension, and even abnormal function of the tissues supplied by the nerves being irritated. This is why people with symptoms such as migraines, indigestion and menstrual cramping often find chiropractic care helpful.

How Does Chiropractic Treat These Problems?
Chiropractic care is centered around the adjustment which is a controlled force to the joint that can produce a popping noise. We may also employ the use of complimentary therapy like ultrasound, muscle stimulation, heat, ice or soft tissue techniques such as massage, ART or Graston.

Does Chiropractic Care Hurt?
In the majority of cases, chiropractic care actually feels good. However, most of our patients come to us in pain. Initially, care can cause some soreness similar to exercise. Every effort is made to increase your comfort and reduce your pain as soon as possible. This allows us to move on to finding and resolving the cause of your pain.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe?
Absolutely. The most comprehensive study to date in New Zealand found chiropractic care to be "remarkably safe." Malpractice insurance rates for chiropractic are a small fraction of medical malpractice premiums because medication and invasive measures, such as surgery, are not employed.

How Many Adjustments Will It Take?
That depends on many factors. The three main ones are: 1) Your age and extent of your condition or ailment. 2) Your willingness to participate in your own care(exercise, diet, rest) 3) The goals you choose! Some patients just want out of pain. That's okay. Chiropractic care has an enviable record of reducing pain quickly and economically. It can often take anywhere from one to four weeks to get your pain under control. Other patients want to go beyond pain relief and address any underlying weakness, imbalance, postural faults...etc. This takes more time and more work on the patient's part. We stand ready to assist the patient towards their chosen goal, be it pain relief or function restoration.

What If I Am Pregnant?
Pregnant women respond very well to chiropractic care. Because chiropractic care uses no drugs or surgical modalities it is a great relief to many women. There are some cases that cannot be treated safely. Complicated pregnancy (placenta previa, incompetent cervix, etc.) must be approached carefully, if at all, and often we need to communicate directly with your obstetrician or mid-wife to assure safe care.

What If I Have Osteoporosis?
While we cannot guarantee results in every case, we can guarantee we only take cases we feel are appropriate and will respond to chiropractic care. We also constantly evaluate the patients response to care. If we aren't getting results as expected, we stop and reevaluate. This usually leads to either a change in our approach or a referral to an appropriate specialist.

What If I Do Not Get Better?
Pain of any kind, at any age, is a sign that something isn’t right. Pain is the way your body signals that a limit has been reached or a problem has developed. Since we can adapt, minor aches and pains are often shrugged off. While they may go away, if the underlying problem remains unattended, the problem can slowly worsen until it becomes more difficult and expensive to resolve.

Can chiropractic relieve PMS?
If you have subluxations, especially in the lower spine that impair nerves that direct and monitor the reproductive and hormonal systems, chiropractic could be helpful. Undetected subluxations may also be responsible for pelvic pain, incontinence, sexual dysfunction and even infertility. Maybe chiropractic can help. Find out!
What's a side effect?
It may sound like a bonus; something extra, but chiropractors know it should more accurately called an "unintended effect," and "unwanted effect" or in some cases an "adverse effect." A pill can't come close to matching your body's ability to create and deliver the essential compounds it needs. That's when it's important to make sure your nervous system is working correctly—the purpose of chiropractic care!
